Times shown in Asia/Dubai. Sessions follow each centre’s local business hours, so they shift when clocks change for daylight saving. The FX week runs from Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time.
Why sessions matter
Overlaps bring volume
When two major centres are open together — especially London and New York — more banks and funds are trading, spreads tend to be tighter and moves larger.
Quiet hours cost more
Between the New York close and the Tokyo open, liquidity is thin. Spreads often widen, so stops can be hit by price spikes that would not happen at busier times.
Pairs have home sessions
Yen and Aussie pairs wake up in Asia; euro, pound and franc pairs in Europe; dollar and Canadian dollar pairs peak when New York opens and data is released.
Weekend gaps
Markets close from Friday evening to Sunday evening (New York time). News over the weekend can make Monday's opening price jump past your stop.
24 hours, five days a week
The market follows the sun across eight financial centres
Liquidity moves from Sydney to Tokyo, through Dubai and Europe, to New York. Knowing which centres are open tells you when your pair is likely to move — and when spreads widen.
