The events that move currencies

How to read the calendar
Importance
High-importance events — rate decisions, CPI inflation, US non-farm payrolls — can move a currency more in a minute than in the rest of the day.
Actual vs forecast
Markets react to the surprise, not the number. A figure above forecast tends to support that currency; below forecast tends to weigh on it.
Previous and revisions
A big revision to last month's figure can matter as much as the new number, and can explain a move that seems to contradict the headline.
Manage risk around releases
Spreads widen and prices can jump past stops. Many traders reduce size, widen stops or simply wait until the first reaction settles.
